The Japan Consortium for Glycobiology and Glycotechnology (JCGG) established the Tamio Yamakawa Award, to honor the distinguished career of Professor Tamio Yamakawa and his outstanding contributions to the field of Glycoscience. This international award is presented every two years to a glycoscientist who has made widely recognized and major contributions to the field of Glycoscience and is, in principle, a currently active researcher.
The selection committee and JCGG executive board decided that 2018 Tamio Yamakawa Award, the second award, was presented to Dr. Gerald W. Hart, Prof. of Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine, who found GlcNAc modification of proteins in the cytoplasma and created a novel research field in Glycoscience. The Award ceremony and Tamio Yamakawa Award Lecture was held in the 16th JCGG Symposium on November 26, 2018 in Hongo.
The first Tamio Yamakawa Award was presented to Prof. Markus Aebi of ETH Zurich on November 1, 2016.
